Photography has been transformative for me. In 1980 a good friend and I traveled from California to Minnesota by hopping freight trains. We both carried 35 mm cameras and a super 8 movie camera with the goal of documenting the journey. During this 4-month adventure I began to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. What was once just a field of corn, became a magical scene with the right lighting and background atmosphere. I began to love what I was photographing and worked to capture the emotion in what I saw. It gave me a sense of worth, purpose and direction. It was an awakening for me.
